Why Are We So Selfish………….? (A Pathetic Real Story)

Why Do We Become So Selfish?

Today I am compelled to share a heart touching incident with the whole world which I learned a few days back. Two children (real brother and sister) used to read in school with the aid of an organization. Their father was a drunkard and mother used to do petty household jobs. There were other 2-3 brothers and sisters. Elder sisters had been married in tender ages. Elder brother too used to do the menial job in his tender ages. This girl was a very week child and used to live in dirty and torn clothes. The same position was that of the boy as well. One day, the persons of this organization saw these kids on the hungry and thirsty state in the boiling road in scorching heat in May 2011. They were in bare feet. Only God knew, how they used to walk with bare feet. That person of this organization went to their parents and requested to get these kids to join Ek Koshish. Initially, the father was not ready, though the mother was ready. Father raised questions like who would pay for, what would be the benefit of all such a ‘drama’, our forefathers were illiterate and lived a life like ours and we too would do the same, etc. Anyhow, he was convinced that if they become educated, they would change their lifestyle and thinking and the entire family would be able to live with dignity and pride. Anyhow he started sending these two kids to this organization. They required thorough one to one personal attention as they were totally backward, lacking confidence and in short knew nothing. It was as if they were from a different illiterate world.

Though it was a herculean task to inculcate them, but this challenge was accepted as a solemn duty by that entire organization. Special attention, hours and hours every day, were given on all areas for their development and growth. For the first six months, they could not even understand the basics. But after six-seven months, when they had shed inner fear from their brain, both started doing wonders and started learning alphabets, etiquettes, and manners…. They started doing anything like a kid from higher society even they started dreaming of becoming a doctor or teacher etc.

In 2012, taking their growth, they were got admitted in a good public school by this organization. In short, surprisingly they did very well and both were among the first five in their classes. In sports, music, and dance also they had started doing well. Everyone was happy to see their growth.

But all of sudden in 2014, their father refused to send them to school. On being asked he excused that he could not do any work know and as such he wanted these kids to do some work to support his day to day life. It was very sad and surprising. Ultimately he withdrew these kids from public school in spite of fervent appeals of all volunteers from this organization.

One day what was seen, was shocking! The girl, in her tender age, was doing work as a maidservant with her soft hands in a big house on a monthly petty wage and the boy was compelled to join some tea/coffee stall to clean the utensils…how pathetic it was. Destiny had crumbled upon them!

Just think about who spoiled their life- parents, luck, God or anything else? Why we are so selfish? Why do we not come out of our selfish motifs even in the matter of our kids? Was that the duty of a parent towards his own kids? Could liquor lead to such a downfall of a person? Could the rich class be so merciless to have kids to keep them their slaves in their tender age?

Though I am busy in preparation for my exams this is haunting me like a ghost! I am disturbed and still thinking for the right answer…

Self- Retrospection (woods are lovely .....miles to go before I sleep)

After a long summer vacations, the schools have opened once again and the children of Ek Koshish have once again started going to the schools after a lull fired by scorching heat of the sun. I am also feeling a sort of vacuum in my inner self as my hours with these children are cut down due to their schools.

Really it is peace giving to be with them, to teach them, to talk and laugh with them, to share their innocent problems, to know about their little needs and to make efforts to resolve their tiny problems. Smile on their little faces, always fills me with immense pleasure and peace.  Do not know the reason as to why it happens actually? But I like and love to be with them. I want to see them grow and gain heights in their lives. I too wants others to join hands in hand in the similar cause. But the question that often arises in my mind as to how can I change the world? What type of other efforts could I do for this cause?

But I do not find exact answers to these issues. But one thing my heart always throbs, is that I can do something very big for these children in my coming future. Heart’s voice I always accept. I too wish God may help me in achieving my goal! Sometimes questions arise if we are part of this universe and nature, then why disparity exists on this beautiful planet? Why are we not equal? Why there are billions poor children with no education, no privilege? Mind tries its best to know the answers but is lost in the haze of plenty thoughts and arguments. Ultimately I just think that I have to make my efforts listening to the voice of my inner self only.

I just remember the beautiful lines of Robert Frost- “Woods are lovely dark and deep, but I have miles to go before I sleep”. How beautifully, Frost has tried to resolve the ongoing conflict in mind and advocates peace in the turbulent and wild inner self of a person mad for attaining goals in life.

Poverty and Education: A Vicious Circle of Cause and Effect

Today while working with the students, I was just thinking whether the education would be able to remove the miseries and poverty of their families. Immediately a question arose in my mind, what if some of the children do not complete their education or are compelled to leave in between due to any reasons? Then I started thinking and thinking and after some time, appeared to reach some conclusion and promised myself to assist these less affluent children to complete their education so that they could break this vicious circle.

Poverty as a cause leads to illiteracy and also illiteracy generates property in its turn. As such it is apt to say – poverty is not only a cause to illiteracy but also poverty is an effect of illiteracy.

It is a vicious circle that goes hand in hand. We can understand this problem in this way.  Circumstances of poverty in family affects education of one’s family members in many ways. It is just possible that a student, due to poverty will not get higher education as compared with the children of more well off  people in the society and his lower education would compel him to do menial jobs which would be less rewarding leaving him and his family again in poverty. This example shows that though due to poverty a student could not get higher education. As such poverty is the cause of illiteracy. Also due to his lower education, he could not become able to earn lot for himself and his family which has left the family in poverty.  As such while imparting education it is also important factor that the children receive complete education in the field which they opt for so that in future this vicious circle could be broken.

It appears to be true within the context of entire world that unless and until these children do not receive complete education, they would not be able to break this vicious circle and let us join our hands to assist these innocent children and make this beautiful planet poverty and illiteracy free.

NATURE: THE AMBIGUOUS OF ALL

Summer vacations are going to expire very soon. All children are busy in completing their home works before the schools open. Of course they are not as lucky as other children of the rich people who spend their summer holidays at mountainous terrains. Prior to this year, I used to visit to the mountains in every summer vacations and have seen the beauty of Greater Himalayas and have had so many unique experiences which sometimes are still haunting me – What is Nature, Who created it, How is it healing, what can it have its impact on one’s inner and outer life, whether god and nature are the same and if so, who created god? All these questions coupled with strange and unique experiences are unsolved and are still unanswered in spite thousand and thousand years after human creation.
All of a sudden, when I was taking a class of the children for the purpose of getting their homework completed, I asked one question from one student, named Ravi- what is nature? There was a pin drop silence and every child was looking at one another’s face. Ravi who was a student in 6th standard was looking down at earth with his face and eyes blank as if he knew nothing. After a few seconds, I took the lead and just to ease out the atmosphere, I asked another question- what are trees, mountains, clouds, wind, rain, stars, sun, moon etc?  Still there was a silence. Though I had asked a very basic question but these children were unable to answer. The question was why? It appeared to me that they were so ignorant that they could not resemble themselves with nature. Then to break the silence, I told them these are Nature.... Nature is like our mother............... that cures our miseries and paves the way for our growth. .... I was just talking about the goodness and motherly traits of nature, in the mean time Rakhi, a girl child, spoke extempore ...” Agar Prakriti hamari mata hai, toh bhookamp kyon atta hai aur hamare ghar gir jate hain aur bahut log maare jatein hain” (If nature is our mother, why earthquake comes and pulls down our houses and many people are killed). I was shocked to hear such a response from such a small child. I called her near to me and asked very politely as to why she thought so. Her mother had told her that an earthquake had come recently in the region of Nepal and its surrounding parts of India and many of her relatives were killed. I had no answer except hugging that girl. In front of my eyes I had my good memories which I had lived with nature during my several trips and on the other hand what the girl child had spoke with such anger against nature.
Children are always true as they do not adopt dual standard while putting forth whatever is in their inside. It is true, Nature may be furious but the question is why? I am still haunting to find the answer and reply to that child!

ILLETERACY : THE ROOT CUASE OF POVERTY AND SLAVERY

Hello

I am working with this wonderful NGO for the last 2-3 years as and when I get time and also during my vacations. the prime motif of this NGO is - imparting education to the children coming from the down most strata of society, for  their all round growth of those who could never dream of getting education and become like us. It is a wonderful experience for me to teach these children. It is of immense pleasure to play with them, to listen their thoughts about life.... really a new world for me which has changed a lot of my thought process. it is not only peaceful but also seem to provide a meaning to my life as well when I am with them. It is really soothing and exciting to see them growing in such a different atmosphere. Alas everyone the world could contribute like this to eradicate illiteracy and poverty from this beautiful earth.

It is true, illiteracy is the real cause poverty and slavery which in turn results into human miseries. If  we the well off people pay a little attention to these people who lead an  illiterate life, I am sure wonders can happen on the earth................. But I unable to think as to why we all do not think like this and remain busy in ourselves. No one thinks about the causes of such illiteracy so no body thinks about solutions to this gigantic problem that has made more than 70 % population of the world illiterate................

Any way, this year also in the summer vacations, I have joined this organisation to be with these innocent children and would be sharing my experience on my blogs at least for the time I remain here. ....

Thanks

Pencil and Eraser- A real Inspiring Story

Some of us have already lost either one or both or all of our "Erasers" But it's still nice to be reminded of them!

   Pencil: I'm sorry !

Eraser: For what? You didn't do anything wrong.
Pencil: I'm sorry because you get hurt because of me.

Whenever I made a mistake, you're always there to erase it.

But as you make my mistakes vanish, you lose a part of yourself.

You get smaller and smaller each time.
Eraser: That's true. But I don't really mind. You see, I was made to do this.

I was made to help you whenever you do something wrong.

Even though one day, I know I'll be gone and you'll replace me with a new one,

I'm actually happy with my job.

So please, stop worrying. I hate seeing you sad.

Every one can find this conversation between the pencil and the eraser very inspirational.

Parents are like the eraser whereas their children are the pencil.

They're always there for their children, cleaning up their mistakes.

Sometimes along the way, they get hurt, and become smaller / older, and eventually pass on.

Though their children will eventually find someone new (spouse),

But parents are still happy with what they do for their children,

And will always hate seeing their precious ones worrying, or sad.

All my life, I've been the pencil.

And it pains me to see the eraser that is my parents getting smaller and smaller each day.

For I know that one day,

All that I'm left with would be eraser shavings and memories of what I used to have.

Talent Hunt by EK

Ek Koshish has been engaged actively in providing the education to those class of children which are not paid any attention by their parents as well as the Society. Ek Koshish accepts the children which have never been to any school and their parents can not afford them to go school for various reasons including the reason these children are the basis of their bread and butter as they has to work in their infant age for them in inhumane conditions. As such their childhood is spoiled and sacrificed due to their family needs and social backwardness. Games, sports, music etc which are essential for their growth are totally alien things for them.

However EK, with its attempts has started sports and music activities for the children who are coming  from this neglected class and hope that results would be better and EK may succeed in getting out some prominent children who could at least fulfill their dreams with proud and dignity.

In such efforts, EK has recognized talent of Cricket in one boy (EK do not want to publicize his name yet to give the whole word a surprise) who always dreams of Cricket. He wants to become Tendulkar. EK is trying its best to materialize his dream. Presently he is learning in a famous cricket academy and is preparing for playing a big tournament in future.   We wish him all the best!

Similarly we are trying to recognize other talents in children of this neglected class. And hope in our efforts, we shall succeed.

Children from Poor and Inhumane Background Going School for the First Time

Children from Poor and Inhumane Background Going School for the First Time

Ek Koshish feels immense pleasure to write this blog that our constant efforts to make the children coming from the very very poor and inhumane background of society, eligible to take admissions in an English Medium Modern School.

Ek Koshish has been providing coaching and training continuously to 23 children since long for making them capable of receiving proper education at public schools so that they become successful in their lives and be equally placed in the society and get rid of the curse of poverty and inhumane livings. Out of these 23 children, seven children shown in the photos above have qualified for admissions in Dr Karam Vir Public School, an English Medium Public School at Faridabad. Ek Koshish has fully sponsored their entire admissions and monthly tuition fees and other expenses to be incurred on their education (uniforms, bags, books and other stationary etc) as their parents could not have afforded any of their expenses. Most of the parents are daily wage earners and seek the work on daily basis. They also belong to farfetched areas where life is too tough and harsh having always lack of even basic amenities and facilities and no education at all.

It was a matter of proud for entire team of Ek Koshish to see the parents of children so happy on the occasion of admissions of their children. They were very excited to see their children going for the first time to any school. It was visible on their faces that they could believe to see that their children would be admitted in an English medium public school in which children of the rich class also take education. During discussion with them, the parents of these children told that as far as their memory goes back, no one in their entire family had ever gone to any kind of school what to say of public school. All parents of these children are illiterate knowing no alphabet (except one i.e. father of Yash who attended primary school in village upto 2nd standard in village). The parents of these children have now started dreaming to make their children Engirneer, Doctor, Government officer etc. May God bless them to see their dreams turning out to be true!

To see the ecstasy, joy and happiness and other mixed emotions of happiness (which is very difficult to express in words) on the innocent faces of these children, on the occasion of their admission, was really a great moment in our lives which one can really equate with ‘bliss’.

The entire team of “Ek Koshish” is very very thankful to all who have contributed in this “one attempt” and further hope that the same co-operation shall be rendered to us for all such humane efforts dedicated to society. Ek Koshish is highly thankful to its volunteers specially Mrs Sunita and Mrs Daisy who have contributed a lot by putting thier much needed efforts to make these children capable for public schools. We are also thankful to Mrs Sunita who has in addition to her other efforts, taken the responsibility of Kiran also.

INDIAN FESTIVAL AND TRADITION OF NAVRATAS

INDIAN FESTIVAL AND TRADITION OF NAVRATAS

Festival of Navratras is celebrated in India for nine continuous nights which are considered and believed to the most sacred period when Goddess Durga (Almighty Goddess Mother) blesses each and every one who prays Her sincerely and honestly. In Indian religion, there are many legends attached to this spiritual festival of Navratra. All of them are related to Goddess Durga, Incarnation of Shakti (Hindu Almighty Mother Goddess) and Her nine forms which are prayed in one way of the other by Hindus. In India this festival is celebrated in different styles.

This festival falls twice. First time, it festival falls at the end of March or beginning of April every year. Second time it falls in September every year.

It is one of the most celebrated festivals of Hindus living in Northern India. It also holds special significance in  Gujrat and Bengal and one can see it in the zeal and fervor of the people with which they indulge in the festive activities to celebrate Navratra. Dandiya and Garba Rass (dancing by men and women with wooden sticks in their hands which they strike against each other while dancing and singing) are the highlights of the festival in Gujarat.

It marks the augmentation of new season, farmers sow seeds and thank the Goddess for Her blessings and pray for better yield.

Goddess Durga is worshipped in nine forms in Navratras. In the first three days of Navratras, Goddess Durga, Warrior Goddess mounted on a Lion, dressed in red clothes is worshiped in Her various incarnations in these three days  which are  known as Goddess Kumari, Goddess Parvati and Goddess Kali  which are worshipped during first three days. They represent the three different classes of womanhood that include the Child, the Young Girl and Mature woman. During next navaratras Hindus pray Goddess Durga in the form of Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity shown dressed in gold and mounted on an owl, and also as Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess Of Knowledge, shown dressed in milky white costumes mounted on a pure white swan with lute in Her hands.

Sweets and delicious deserts are prepared for the celebrations. Children and adults dress up in new bright-colored dresses for the night performances.

Many Hindus observe rigorous fasts during entire period of Navratras. The festival culminates on the day called as  Ram Navami. On this day, Hindus perfom Kanya Pujan with nine little girls (worshipping little girls symbolizes worshipping of nine forms of Goddess Durga). People with pure heart and soul invite these little nine girls to their homes, offer sacred place to sit, wash their feet with sacred water, put tika on their head (Hindu put red marks on their forehead which is called very auspicious and sacred) and then offer them good food, sweets, new clothes, other gifts and small money in the form of thank and seek their blessings while they depart from their homes.

May Goddess Durga bless the whole world with peace, prosperity and fraternity!

APPEAL TO THE WHOLE WORLD: SAVE GIRLS AS THEY ARE PEARLS..... AND THIS FESTIVAL MARKS THE IMPORTANCE OF GIRLS IN OUR SOCIETY SINCE TIME IMMEMORIAL.......

FESTIVALS OF LOHRI AND MAKAR SAMKRANTI

FESTIVALS OF LOHRI AND MAKAR SAMKRANTI

It is one of the most important festival of Northern India which is celebrated with utmost fanfare in traditional style. This festival is always celebrated on 13th January. Lohri  marks the end of winter season and it is the day when the sun changes its course also which is also called ‘Makar Samkranti’ which too is celebrated throughout India which marks the start of auspicious days. Makar Samkranti marks the transition of sun from Saggitarius to Capricorn during winter in the northern hemisphere which is called ‘Uttrayan’ (Sun starts moving towards northern side).  In Northern India It is called ‘Makar Samkranti and celebrated on 14th January.  In other parts of India, it is celebrated with different names like Pongal in South India, Bihu in North East India etc.  People who are inclined towards old traditions and religion, take a dip in the morning in the holy water of sacred rivers or ponds etc and worship the Sun to give them peace and prosperity. People also give charities to the poor and needy ones in the form of food, clothes and also money etc. These traditions are still alive and in small town and cities of India which are not fully affected by modernism, one can find stalls distributing hot food, clothes and money to the poor and needy ones on the day of Makar Samkranti.  This tradition is continuing since the time immemorial and finds its mention in our ancient scriptures as well.
As regards Lohri, it is a festival of Punjab in India and it has its origin in Punjab and nobody knows as to how it started and how old it is. There are various stories popular behind this festival.
Some people believe that it is related to the famous tale of a person namely ‘Dulla Bhatti’. Dulla Bhatti was a highway robber in Punjab during the reign of Akbar who was the emperor of India at that time in 16th Century. Dulla Bhatti used to rob the rich only for specific purpose to help the poor and needy with the money he robbed from the rich. He also used to rescue the girls who were kidnapped and taken forcibly for sale in  the slave markets of other neighbouring countries. He also used to give money to the parents of the rescued girls for arranging their marriage. As such he was a superman for the people of Punjab during that time.  That is why the most famous song of  Lohri  which everyone in India is well acquainted and sings with great zeal has his name in almost every line of the song to express gratitude to Mr Dulla Bhatti, a bandit by profession but a noble soul.
When the festival of Lohri starts approaching in January, small groups of boys and girls knocks at the door of houses and start singing the famous song of Lohri i.e. "Chunri Munri ho, Tera Kaun Bichara ho, Dulla Bhatti wala ho.............”. People take it as auspicious if the groups of the little boys knocks their doors singing this song. In turn, people give them popcorn, peanuts, dry fruits, crystal sugar, sesame seeds (til), jaggry as well as coins. Though, in big cities, this tradition of boys knocking the doors on Lohri is getting reduced, but in small towns and cities of Punjab and Northern India, one can discern these things very easily for at least 15 days before the festival finally comes on 13th January.

Some people are of the belief that the festival of Lohri has  its an other link. It has derived its name Lohri from the word  ‘Loi’ who was wife of a famous poet cum saint, Kabir Das who also lived during the period of Akbar in 16th century. In local Punjabi dialect, Lohri is pronounced as Lohi. Some people associate this festival with an other ancient legend of Holika, and Lohri is believed to be the sister of Holika. Holika was burnt in the holy fire by Hirnakashyap who was against even the recital of God's name. Holika burnt in the holy fire but Lohri survived after that. And people celebrate this festival to remember her. As regards Holika, Hindus celebrate a separate festival for her holy sacrifice in the fire, called Holi which too is celebrated in the month of February or March every year. Holi is the festival of colors which is well known all over the world.

Celebration of Lohri is very simple but very attractive which tightens the relationship and emotional bonds between the people. Freinds, relatives and family members gather  in the open space in or outside home and light a bonfire at sunset. All sings together and move around the bonfire dancing, rejoing and chanting  Lohri songs. They also throw some peanuts, jiggery and sesame seeds (reoris) etc in the bonfire to worship it. In addition to this, they sit around this bonfire gossiping, cracking jokes, doing mimickery, singing songs, playing antakshri etc for hours making the atmoshpere more pleasant. This continues for 2-3 hours till 10-11 pm. Really It is fantastic to celebrate such festivals in India. Some people organise dinner etc on this occasion which adds to the celebration. In villages of Punjab, people celebrate this festival whole of the night.
May God bring peace, harmony and prosperity in the world ..... Let us do our Ek Koshish one attempt to make the world a single family through these festivals !

Indian Tradition: ‘Ahoi Ashtami’- One Day Fast by Mothers for Well-being and Long Life of Their Sons

Unique Indian Tradition: ‘Ahoi Ashtami’- One Day Fast by Mothers for Well-being and Long Life of Their Sons
Today is the religious celebration of Ahoi Ashtami in India. In Hinduism, this ritual of  keeping fast by mothers for well being and long life of  their sons which is popularly known as ‘Ahoi Ashtami’ that falls on 8th day of Kartik month every year is the most important ritual in Indian culture and religion. This not only shows immense love and affection of mothers towards their sons but also tends to keep the families joint and united by filling the thoughts of respect and regards by sons for their mothers. This is unique tradition in India as no other country seems to have such tradition. There is a story behind this most important ritual in Indian culture and religion.
There lived a woman with her seven sons and one day she went to forest to bring some soil to plaster the floor of house. While she was digging soil in the forest, she unfortunately and unintentionally killed a small cub like creature. She felt unhappy and sorry over this incident and came back to home. After this incident all of her sons died one after another within a year. The woman started believing in her heart that her sons died due to her sin of killing that cub. One day she narrated the incident of her killing of that cub to some wise ladies in her neighbourhood.   Upon hearing the story of that woman, they advised her to keep fast, confess and pray the Almighty Goddess Ma Bhagwati by making a picture of that cub on the wall on 8th day of Kartik which would redeem her sin of killing the cub. The woman kept fast on that day and prayed the Goddess as was advised by making a picture of that cub on the wall and after some time the Goddess blessed her with all of her seven sons. Since then, this tradition has become a ritual amongst the Hindu mothers to worship the Almighty Goddess Ma Bhagwati by keeping a whole day fast and praying the Almighty Goddess Ma Bhagwati in the form of picture of cubs made on a wall of house for the well being and long life of their sons. Really the tradition is filled with immense love and affection between mothers and sons.

On this day Hindu mothers make pictures of cub(s) on the wall of their house or hang pictures of Ma Bhagwati on the wall and pray Ma Bhagwati as shown in the picture. For the long life of their sons, they also wear a necklace of silver beads around their neck.   Two silver beads are added every year in this necklace of silver beads for long life of their sons. Mothers keep on adding these silver beads until they die. In the day time, women/mother gather and listen to the story of Ahoi Ashtami with great devotion. In the evening they pray Goddess Bhagwati and then also pray stars for the long lives of their sons. After that they give food to the eldest lady in the house or if there is no elder lady in the home, they give food to some other elderly woman in the neighbourhood or in the temple. After that only they eat something to break their fast.
It is really a unique tradition in India only to cement the bonds of love and affection between mother and son.
